A little about myself...

These shorts I found in my grandparents' house.
Hello Again!

So, in my last post, I did say I might introduce myself. So I guess I'll do that. Some of you may know me as Ruth, others as Ruthie. Whichever one feels natural to you is fine with me. I grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, where my family has been for three (some say four, depending on who you count as one) generations. I grew up in the church. My dad became a pastor when I was very young, and if there are any other "PKs" reading this, you know what that's like. Everyone is watching youALWAYS. That didn't stop me from rebelliously wearing almost whatever I wanted—most of the time. There were many Christmas Eve candlelight services that I was strongly encouraged to wear a dress and stockings (pantyhose?) that would always end up ripped after running around the whole night.

I went through many phases throughout grade school and college, trying to express myself while at the same time trying to fit as comfortably as I could into the box I thought I, along with everyone else, had to be in. Ah, the inner conflict. We're talking about clothes here so I won't go much into the juicy stuff. Perhaps another time.

My popular "grandma" shirt

More about myself! I have a bachelor's degree in cello performance, which I ended up not pursuing after graduation because my life fell apart (in my head). Instead, I went back to Hawaii, in the middle of one of the lowest points of my short life, and found myself somehow. I worked at Banana Republic, selling clothes and dressing up for a living. I will always be grateful for that job, for many things. Working in retail, definitely helped mold me in my cocoon. After I was tired of being home, I rather impulsively applied to a violin repair program in Minnesota and found, what could be, my life's career. Now I am learning how to fix up old and new fiddles in the middle of "the Capital of the World" (we're talking about Gotham, of course 🦇).

Reflecting on things, I think it is so fascinating how changes in your life can influence the way you physically present yourself. How a new haircut can bring out a new attitude or vice-versa. In high school, I almost exclusively wore hoodies. In college, I showed up to class in my pajama pants. I have sort of found a groove now, regarding my style. I still try new things... and fail at trying new things. Who knows, maybe a few years from now, my wardrobe will be completely different!

Fall Time, Baby!

It's Fall!!! Well, we experienced a glimpse of it this past weekend here in New York anyway. It was lovely! Although it was rainy and cloudy, the cool temperatures brought a smile to my face. Although I started this blog in the summer, my warm weather game really isn't strong. I guess you could say I have some body image issues and I can only stay covered up so much without overheating. I'll work on that next year. The cooler season, however, is where my game is at. Sweaters, shoes, jackets, scarfs, socks... cover me up! Fall and Winter are my two favorite seasons. The pair of shoes in this outfit made its debut this past Sunday. I purchased them back home in Honolulu (why they sell them there? they sell a lot of cold weather things there that people hoard...) in December, but they are cold weather shoes. They are lined with a very soft fuzzy lining for insulation, thus the long wait to use them. I got a few compliments on them at the pool hall. One guy seemed to be a ...

A Little Backyard Fun

Aloha, So I am going to use this post to show off a little fun thing a friend, and I did a couple weekends ago (with pics) while talking about/reviewing one of my favorite pieces of outdoor clothing. I spontaneously bought a Groupon for waterfall rappelling with the company Northeast Mountaineering (I have a little short paragraph about thoughts on them below) a couple of months ago. While packing for this short one day guided activity, I knew exactly what I was going to wear to get pummeled by a waterfall. The pants I am wearing in these photos is Patagonia's Men's Gi III pant. I bought these pants in April 2016. They have since become go-to pant for hiking, traveling, camping, chilly nights on the beach, and basically any outdoor activity. As I said in my last post, I prefer to wear long pants over shorts, even when I am hiking, wading through streams, or in this case waterfall rappelling, no matter how hot it is.  I bought these pants in Hawaii, with Hawaii type of...
